Use a gsm phone on a cdma network |

Part of the
problem with cell phones today is that they aren't entirely
interchangeable. Land-line phones that people have in their homes will
work with any service provider because they all work the same way,
roughly. The way cell phones run can vary between using the Global
Systems for Mobile Communications or the Code Division Multiple Access.
A lot of people have figured out that the more popular 3g network is a
CDMA network, and thus want to be able to use a GSM phone on a CDMA
network. Unfortunately this is much easier said than actually done.
The simplest way to explain why it is not an easy process to use a GSM
phone on a CDMA network is because in theory, the network is latched on
to the SIM card. Most CDMA phones have the equivalent of a SIM card
built directly into the phone, which means a person can't swap out the
SIM cards from one type of phone to another. There are a select
few CDMA phones that do use SIM cards but as with anything, tweaking
electronics to do something they aren't meant to do can lead to serious
glitching and other problems.
There are much more complex and technical reasons involved with why a
person can't use a GSM phone on a
CDMA network. The two networks
function in completely different ways. A GSM network is the most common
network found among service providers because it is cheap for them as
far as phone calls and text messaging goes. They use multiple channels
for the phones to link onto at a lower frequency. This means that not
only is data transfer relatively slow and limited, it also means the
network isn't very secure. This is considered to be second generation
technology. The upside to GSM phones is the ability to switch a SIM
card to a new phone, and they can be used in other countries.
CDMA technology runs very differently and is what allows high tech
phones such as the iPhone to do all kinds of amazing things. The main
reason people can't use a GSM phone on a CDMA network is because the
CDMA network runs on only one channel and uses multiple frequencies.
This increases the bandwidth that a phone can have, meaning people can
use their phones for talking, web browsing, downloading ringtones, and
sending videos all at the same time if they really wanted to. It also
makes the phone network more secure because it's much harder to find a
single call that is spread out on multiple frequencies. This is what
makes the 3g network great.
